Chapter Eleven

Marriage on the Mountain

E

llie paced in Demeter’s living room as she waited for the arrival of her mother and sister. She hoped they’d be happy for her and not disappointed. She hoped they wouldn’t oppose her marriage to two people, since it was far from traditional.

What was traditional, anyway? Her mother and sister had families without partners. And other people had multiple partners, just not simultaneously. Was it necessarily better to marry two or three people consecutively?

She hoped that one day, after the conflict with the gods, if she wasn’t imprisoned somewhere, that her family could know the truth about her life as a goddess and share in the benefits of it. Ellie wanted to give her family a big house and nice cars and all the money they could ever want so they could be happy and not have to struggle every day of their lives. She hoped with all her heart that she could do that for them.

She also hoped that her mother would give her away at the ceremony, since there was no way Ellie would ever consider asking James Lorenzo.

The more she thought about James, the more upset she became—especially when she considered his lack of regret. He never once said he was sorry or that he’d wondered about her or that he’d hoped the best for her. He’d put her and her mother out of his mind and had forgotten all about them.

Her stomach dropped when Hecate appeared with her mother and sister. Her mother was wearing her new, short wig, with the ends curled up, and Dominique’s long hair was French braided in a single braid down her back.

“What on earth?” her mother cried, looking around. Then she spotted Ellie. “Ellie? Is that really you?”

“It’s really me, Mama.”

“How did we get here? What’s happening?” Dominique asked.

“I’ll explain everything,” Ellie said. “Please have a seat.”

Hecate vanished, causing Ellie’s mother to scream.

“Sit down, Mama,” Ellie said.

“You’re pregnant!” Dominique said as she sat beside their mother on Demeter’s couch. “When did that happen? It looks like you’re ready to pop! Is this why you haven’t come home? I bet you didn’t know that I’m expecting, too.”

“Congratulations, Dominique.” Ellie sat on the loveseat. “This is going to be hard for you to believe, but please listen. Have you ever heard of Zeus and Poseidon and those gods from ancient Greece?”

“Like Aphrodite?” Dominique asked.

“Yes,” Ellie said. “Well, they’re real. They exist. The goddess who brought you here is one of them. Her name is Hecate.”

Dominique looked at their mama, and their mama looked at Dominique. Then the two of them busted out laughing.

After a moment, her mother said, “Tell us what’s really going on.”

“I’m getting married,” Ellie said.

“Seriously?” Dominique asked. “Who is this guy, and why haven’t we ever met him?”

“It’s not a guy, actually.”

“Oh,” Dominique said. “I always thought you might be a lesbian.”

Ellie shook her head. “It’s not a woman, either. It’s two guys. Two gods.”

“Can you quit with all the god talk?” her mother said. “You don’t have to make up stories to defend your polygamous lifestyle.
